Downtown Akron church is closer to move to Green
The congregation at High Street Christian Church is a step closer to moving from its downtown Akron location to Green. On Friday, leaders of the church signed a $750,000 purchase agreement with DeHoff Development Co. for 9.2 acres in the Spring Hill development off Arlington Road, between Boettler Road and state Route 619. The Disciples of Christ congregation plans to build a 24,000-square-foot church for $1.25 million to $1.75 million on the land.“Our plan right now is to build in three phases: a multipurpose center with a fellowship area, where we will worship initially; an educational space; and then, a main worship center,” said the Rev. Joseph Eubanks Jr, intentional interim pastor at High Street. “We have not yet set a groundbreaking date.”The church has been at 131 S. High St. in downtown Akron for more than 170 years, but the shrinking congregation no longer needs the 53,000-square-foot building where it is housed. The downtown building is listed for $1.95 million with NAI Cummins.During its heyday, High Street Christian attracted about 1,000 worshippers and its members lived primarily in the downtown area. Today, the church has 250 participating members, with a significant number driving from the southern portion of Summit County to attend services. Although the congregation will move to Green, it is still committed to its mission to serve in the city. Eubanks said the congregation plans to continue its work helping the needy, particularly downtown, via partnerships with other ministries. In addition to the church, plans for the Spring Hill development include more than 40 single-family lots.Colette Jenkins can be reached at 330-996-3731 or cjenkins@thebeaconjournal.com.
